The Economic Development Department of the San Francisco LGBT Center is conducting a comprehensive survey of LGBT-owned businesses across the Bay Area. The purpose of the survey will be to gather statistics surrounding the industry, revenue generation, employee base, and some of the unique characteristics that set the LGBT business community apart. This survey is the first of its kind to assemble this hard data, and with it, the Center and GGBA hope to shed light on the current state of LGBT businesses, especially in the current economic context. The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) and Wells Fargo & Company today announced the fifth annual NGLCC/Wells Fargo LGBT Business Owner of the Year Award, recognizing a small business owner for his/her entrepreneurial spirit and personal service to the community. In addition to a cash grant of $5,000, the recipient will be recognized at the 2009 NGLCC National Dinner, An Evening of Courage, on November 6th at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC. Recently, we caught with a dear friend of ours Kathy Amendola.  Kathy is an LGBT entrepreneur  who owns and runs Cruising’ the Castro Tell us a little about the history of the tour Incredibly, “Cruising’ the Castro”, is celebrating its “20th” Birthday this year!  And it all began in 1989 when a lesbian named, Evelyn Foundren, a.k.a. Trevor Hailey, saw the need both educationally as well as, culturally to share the rich and colorful history of the LGBT community in San Francisco hence, ”Cruisin’ the Castro” tours was created.
